Blog post 2

Hi there, welcome to second life. Here is our secret spot. Since you just arrive, the first thing you can do is shopping at Freebie Galaxy. Most of the items there are free. You can purchase anything such as outfits, decorations, and buildings. But first of all, let me show you our five important spots. We will hold some great activities there. Remember to add them to your landmarks since it will be more convenient for you to find in the future.
Home spot.
First, you can open the world map and type in the location box, 92.220.29 .  Then click the teleport button. You will be teleported to a place in Motru area. This place is near the avenue. You will right see a yellow school bus, yellow fog and a green board. The green boards mark our five spots so you will also see them in other spots. And when you look up, you will see a giant photo of our three friends. They were close friends and fought together for building a greater empire . The five spots were just created by them.
First spot.

An avenue behind the first spot.

Oops I spent too much time talking about those old stories. It’s time to show you the second spot which is in Hilbert area. Please type 5,235,50 in the location box and teleport yourself there. The green board is at the right side of pine trees. And there is a Gamer Girl Belt above the board. When you walk around, you will find yourself surrounded by many huge boards. They are the articles or journals we wrote before. We love to share our ideas here and record on the boards.
The second spot.

While you walk closer, you can see countless butterflies. It is believed that couples who see the cluster of butterflies together could accompany each other for the rest of their lives.
The second spot with butterflies around.

It’s so romantic, right? I almost burst into tears. But we have to visit the third place now. You just turn right and walk straight then you will find the green board. For your reference, the location number is 82,253,44. The green board is nailed on the cypress tree. And on the right side, there are two wooden houses.
The third spot.

Well I guess it’s time to take you to the welcome party. Time for beers and dance. Yeah. It is hold at our fourth spot. The location number is 161, 227, 46. You will see a gazebo with yellow dome and six white collars. The green board is nailed on the hedges. There is an angel statue on your right side. Before the welcome party begins, you might stroll around or run at ease since the vast prairie is on your left side. Or maybe take a look at our photos near the gazebo.
The fourth spot.
By the way, the fifth spot is just behind the gazeboo. The location number is 155,192,44. Many people love to take picture at the Hedge Entrance. There are two patrons at the entrance, one with black outfits and the other with red dress and wings. Besides, the cluster of butterflies and pink flowers are not only for decorations, they might bite boring people. So watch out. Just forget vexation and show your craziness here. Get ready to party!

The fifth spot.

The patron flowers.

The map below can guide you to the above five spots. Have fun!

Online English Learning - Blog post 1

On February 26th 2016, the class of Online English Learning visited the computer classroom in Zhi-xi Hall. It was the first time for students to explore the world of Second Life. We spent a lot of time shopping at freebie galaxy for free outfits. At first, it was difficult to take on and take off clothes and detach objects. Sometimes, I even took off the wrong parts and then the character’s waist just vanished. The picture below just showed this situation. She was frightened.
Figure 1. The woman with a sofa and invisible waist.
Having no idea about this situation, I still went on shopping and trying on various clothes. Finally I found out the choices in the inventory box and fixed the problem. Then she successfully changed her style and became a leopard woman. I stored this appearance immediately thus she could change back to this appearance anytime. She was stronger than before. The pose totally revealed her confidence.
Figure 2. The confident leopard woman.
Next, I also added a tattoo on the leopard woman and had her hair dyed. She was quite satisfied and overjoyed. As the two pictures below showed, the leopard woman laughed out loud at the edge of the freebie galaxy. By pressing F8 on the keyboard, She laughed, first lifted her head and then bent over.
Figure 3. The overjoyed leopard woman.

Figure 4. The leopard woman laughed ceaselessly.

Afterwards I went upstairs and found a floor full of wedding gowns and jewelries. Those wedding gowns were so beautiful. I took off the leopard outfit immediately and tried on the white wedding bottom with lace top as a combination of purity and temptation. The woman’s ambivalent appearance resulted in her blue characteristic. She often became sad and cried without any reason. She covered her face and cried as fleeing from the doomed fate.
Figure 5. Sobbing woman with incomplete wedding gown.

She felt lonely all the time yet refused to know other people in this world. She refused any eye contact. And she also ignored men’s pursuit since she deeply believed that her appearance would result in destruction.

Figure 6. The woman stood alone.
Figure 7. The women without eye contact.

                                      Figure 8. The ignored man.

However, everything changed one day. It all started from the invitation from the teaching assistant. All the classmates were invited to visit a new place when they were obsessed with shopping. They were all teleported including this blue woman. They were once independent yet all desired for a sense of belonging. Thus, they met each other and regained the joy in this land. There were beautiful and calm beach here. No matter it was at sunrise, midday or sunset, the sceneries were all breathtaking and spellbound. Moreover, there was a torii which was built by previous students. They gathered around the torii and took the first photo together.
Figure 9. Taking a photo with classmates.
Thanks to the classmates, the woman became more positive. She even danced when she felt delightful. And she joined a group and got along with two crazy women especially. The two women loved to wear exaggerated clothes and even attached huge wings. The lighthouse was their secret spot. The three loved to meet there and had fun. Before they left, they took a picture together. They raised their right hands together as if saying, ‘‘Vote for us.’’ Or ‘‘We are the queens of the world.’’

Transcription (3) -Final Presentation

Emma&Ruby: Hi everyone.
E: And I am Emma.
R: I am Ruby.
E&R: our topic is Rare or Well-Done.
E: My side is rare, and rare means university students should take abortion.
R: And well-done means to deliver the child and I think university students should deliver their children. And before we start our presentation, we design a game for you. Emma, can you please tell me how to play this game?
E: then we will give someone a balloon, and you have to pass it on to the person who is next to you. And we will play the music, when the music stops, and you get the balloon, then you are assigned to receive a special mission.
R: And if you destroy the balloon, then it is you that you need to receive this mission. So does everyone know how to play this game?
Audience: Yes.
E&R: let’s start our game.
----------------------game time-------------------
E&R: Congratulations! Markenzy and Tim.
R: You got to receive a very special mission, that is, suppose the balloon is a baby, and you need to protect the baby until the end of our presentation. And at the end, we got some questions for you. So now, you just take care of the balloon. Ok let’s start our presentation.
E: ok, I want to ask a question to you. When do you think is the best age to have a child? And Roger? When do you want to have a child?
Roger: In my case, , I don’t know,I think ….. and that does count on an age. Sometimes a person, like is thirty years old, he doesn’t behave a good boy or person, I don’t know. I think that the person should be 25 old enough….
E: okay, it is our outline. But can you guys image that she, such a young girl, she is pregnant! And she is just merely 19 years old. Do you think she should take abortion?
Audience: No.
E: I think she should.
R: About this, I’m going to tell you the reason why I don’t want to take abortion.
Monica: Are you pregnant?
R: Just during the presentation. Few weeks ago, I watched a video on YouTube. The video was about whether college students should take abortion. A girl named Lin Lin argues that if she is pregnant, she will not take abortion because it is a life and she is reluctant to give it up. And she is also afraid of the unborn child becoming a ghost and following her after she takes abortion. And moreover, in the video, Dr. Chen says that university students are special groups. They have higher knowledge background. And so when we encounter pregnant problems, maybe we will solve the problem by ourselves. He also brings up a shocking data. That is, the average amount of abortion is twice as much as the amount of childbirth. And there are 20 percent babies aborted by mothers aged around 18 to 22 years old. According to this video, we can realize abortion may cause eternal mental fear and trauma to the person taking it. And if the baby in the uterus is not moved out completely or during the process of abortion, the doctor hurts the endometrium, it will lead to infertility forever. So, Emma, I got to tell you that after I watched this video, it strengthened my belief that I want to deliver my child.
E: okay, but I saw this video too. And some students think that it is improper for young girls to deliver their child, because their main points are money and marriage. So Ruby, do you have a full time job?
R: No
E: Now, open your purse.
R: What?
E: Open your purse. So does the money come from your family or you earn it by yourself?
R: The money come from my parents.
E: So, most of students even cannot support themselves, and how can they support a child more? And if you choose to deliver the baby, and will you build up a family? This is marriage problem. How can you measure that she or he is the right one?Ifyou just get married because of children, then children will probably become a serious problem when you want to get divorced.Just see the picture. This girl, she thinks that most of students do not have the financial capacity. And the boy even says that if you cannot afford the expense of milk powder, then how can you choose to have a child? And marriage could become a problem.
Let me show you the basic expense of supporting a child. First, delivering in the hospital costs NT20000. Baby’s bacterins cost NT18600. And how about the milk power and diapers? It costs 2000 a month. Do you think it is expensive? Just think it, all of these are just starting!
R: You brought up economical problems. But in 2008, the Article 26 of University Act was amended. It mentions that a student pursuing a bachelor degree or above may request for prolonging the studying term on account of pregnancy, childbirth, or childcare for the toddler under three years old. As for our school, the academic rules of NCU, students can apply for temporary suspension of study because of the abovementioned reasons. So the amended rules ensure students’ rights to education. And I think because of the rules, I can stop my studies at college now. Then I have more time to spend with my child and I have more time to earn money in order to support the economic needs. Moreover, I found a Maylasian case. In 2010, the chief minister of Malacca, Mohammed Ali Rustam, set up the first school for pregnant girls in Malaysia. The school not only provides normal courses, it also gives students a dormitory to live in which is translated into Home of Hope. In School of Hope and Home of Hope, students can receive religious counseling, medical check-ups and skill training such as cooking and baby-caring for the preparation of being a mother and a wife in the near future. And in the school, those girls can receive thoughtful care, nonstop education and most important of all, a shield from the outside gossip, so I think those girls can find hope for their lives and for their babies in the school of hope. And I find hope through their stories.
E: Hope? Nonsense. I think the problems young mothers have to deal with is not only the financial problem, but also the mental stress. The social scholar, Ms. Wang mentions the 4 aspects of the mental stress. From family, I think that you can image how terrible to tell your parents if you are pregnant. And if they cannot understand you and even blame on you, I think you will be very stressful and unhappy. From girls themselves, they are probably not mature in mentally, and it could hard for them to adapt themselves to change of identity- because they are mothers now! And from peers, peers must throw the strange eyes to those young girls. . From the society, some people will think the girl must has complicated relationship or she does not take care about her body, so that she got pregnant. So I think actually, delivering is not as simple as it seems. It means you are parents and you have to take the responsibility. If you cannot do this, I think the baby is more innocent to come to the world.
Here is a case in U.S. Roe was a poor girl in Taxes, and she wanted to take abortion, but the laws did not allow her to do so. She brought it to the Court, asking them to legalize abortion. After 3 years, the Court thought it is difficult indeed for those poor girls to support their children, and they thought that women should have rights of their bodies. Moreover, because the U.S constitution defined that unborn babies are not persons, the court decided to make abortion legal.
So why taking abortion is so disputative? One thing we have to define first. Is an embryo a person?
E&R: What is that?
E:Oh! I know this book, it talks about taking abortion. I can introduce the main points to you.
R: Ok. Maybe you can introduce it to me.
E: This book, Life’s dominion, it talks about taking abortion, and its author is Ronald Drworkin. He is an American law scholar and also a philosopher.
So why do you object to abortion? Do you think taking abortion is immoral? Or very cruel?
This author divided those who are opposed to abortion into two parts. The first part is derivative objection. They care babies’ rights. But actually is meaningless to suppose something has rights when it hasn’t had. Just take Dr. Frankenstein for example. If the doctor could make the dead body come alive, then could the stop of the experiment also be a way to take away the body’s rights?Do we think the dead body has a right? And the second part is the detached objection. They regard taking abortion as a murder and think life is so precious and valuable. But if the pregnancy is resulted from a rape? They will think it is acceptable. And they can even agree women to take abortion when the pregnancy is life-threating.. However, those young girls don’t want the children, and they will also have life difficulty. Now that life is so precious, why the former is acceptable, and the latter is guilty?
R: But I also found some paragraphs to fight against your points. On page 40, I found the ideas of typical liberals who are against abortion. Typical liberals insist that abortion is always the serious moral decision which was made at least after embryos' genetic qualities established and successful embryo implantation. From that time on, abortion means eliminating a human life that has already begun. And it is not allowable to take abortion because of tedious and trivial reasons. For example, a mother wants to take abortion because of a long-expecting journey to Europe. Or because she wants to have a boy, but the baby is a girl and. They are all trivial and tedious excuses. And decision of abortion involves moral aspects. When college students contemplate on whether taking abortion or not, we should take embryos’ benefits of living and the holiness of human lives into account. Even though somebody may think an embryo is not a complete life therefore does not equip with human rights, but it is out there, just inside mother’s uterus. So it is certainly being. It deserves the basic rights to continue living which nobody can deprive of.
So I think if college students can find ways to balance the economical needs and mental pressure, I think we should not give up our babies easily since abortion also make mothers shoulder ethical burdens and social judgments. So, Emma I got to tell you that abortion is not always the best refugee from the upcoming responsibilities. And here are our conclusions, and I think abortion influences mental and physical health. It is a brutal way to deal with the baby and from the amended law and the case in Malaysia, we can realize that there are still many solutions better than abortion.

E: My conclusion is that I think it is not proper for a young girl to have a child. Not only they will have to face the financial problem, they will also have mental stress during the pregnancy. And I think it is not fair that the stigma those girls have to bear when they want to take abortion. If they want, we should stand their side and respect their decision. Putting the overwhelming stress on them with those unclear reasons is too cruel.
R: And now, it is tim for Markenzy and Tim to make decisions. After listening to our presentation, do you want to kill the baby? I got knives. So you can decide.
Markenzy: I keep.
R: Thank you.
(Tim destroyed the balloon)
E&R: Thanks for your listening, and enjoy winter vacation!

Reflection(2)

To begin with, due to the inspiration of the topic of Cassie and Vincent, menu or buffet, I came up with another entertaining topic, Rare or Well-Done, to replace our previous topic. I like this new topic very much and it matches the background of the first slide. I think if our whole group who present on the same day all use topics based on food, it will be really interesting and coherent.
Figure1. The background of first slide.
Besides, because Emma and I are going to present our PPTs by turns, it will be more difficult to design the arrangement of the PPTs. Fortunately, professor gave us some suggestions and intriguing inspiration. The variety of colors is indeed a good way to divide the respective views. Consequently, I am going to change our PPTs background. Blue represents my point of view, red represents Emma’s points. And at the presentation day, I will wear blue clothes and Emma wears red ones. I believe the actions will definitely make our points stand out and make audience get into our different views easily.
Although we try to make our presentation more interesting by using conversation or short drama, our PPTs are really boring compared with others. Last time, I saw Eva and Vicky took advantage of visual images and it did catch audience’s eye. Tony and Alison used plenty of charts to make their points clearer. I would like to add more pictures and charts to illustrate my points. Most important of all, I don’t want our audience get monotonous when looking at out PPTs and finally lose concentration on our presentation. I want to make our PPTs look more colorful and variable by utilizing more eye-catching charts and figures.
Moreover, we are going to change the title of each slide. After discussing with Professor Liang, I realized the importance of using comparative titles. I think it is just like a kind of rhetoric or a comparison. For example, Malaysia Case versus U.S. Case and Mother’s Right versus Baby’s Right.
In conclusion, our final and greatest goal is to make our presentation as entertaining as possible by using conversation, drama, game, images, charts and vivid perspectives since the abortion issue is a serious topic which involves human lives, we don’t want audience feel boring or too solemn during the presentation. As a result, we will begin our presentation with a small game and the loser has to pretend as a pregnant person temporarily with a ballon until the end of our presentation. As usual, before presenting PPTs, Emma and I will have a short drama to bring out our topic. And during the presentation, we prepare a surprise in order to bringing up the appearance of the book we used in our annotations. At the end, after listening to our respective points, we will give the loser of the previous game a knife and the loser has to choose whether deliver his or her child. I wish the international students will enjoy our presentation.

Revised Annotation (4)- Embryos Deserve Rights To Live

Ronald Dworkin is a contemporary American scholar of constitutional law. In Dworkin's book, Life's dominion: an argument about abortion, euthanasia, and individual freedom, he argues on page 29 that there are two arguable aspects in abortion issue. The first concerns whether the embryo has the two morally relevant qualities or not, benefits of living continuously and rights to protect these benefits. If the answer to the first question is yes, then we can get derivative objections against abortion and the derivative reasons of allowing law to prohibit or to restrain abortion.
And then here comes another query, is abortion sometimes wrong morally not because it makes somebody unfair or non-right but because it denies and offends the sacredness or irreverence of human lives? Suppose the second question is true, this is detached objections against abortion and it can also hold detached reasons which argue that abortion is illegal or it has to be regulated instead of mentioning derivative objections and explanations.
On page 40, Ronald brings up the ideas of typical liberals who are against abortion. They insist that abortion is always the serious moral decision made at least after embryos' individual genetic qualities established and successful embryo implantation.(usually about fourteen days following pregnancy) From that time on, abortion means eliminating a human life that has already begun. Only due to this cause, it involves in solemn moral expense.
It is by no means allowable to take abortion by virtue of tedious and trivial reasons. Unless abortion is taken in order to avoid tremendous harm, there are no excuses for abortion. The following are false actions. A woman takes abortion because of a long-expecting journey to Europe, being more comfortable when getting pregnant in other seasons, the embryo being a girl and she wanting a boy and so on. (Ronald Dworkin, 2002)
Decision of abortion involves moral aspects. Both derivative and detached objections stand against abortion. When contemplating on whether taking abortion or not, we need to take embryos’ benefits of living and the holiness of human lives into account. Even though somebody may think an embryo is not a complete life therefore does not equip with human rights, but it is out there, just inside mother’s uterus. It is certainly being. It deserves the basic rights to continue living which nobody can deprive of.
As for the abovementioned motives for abortion, college students may find other reasons other than merely boring and petty ones such as economical burdens and psychological pressure. If students can find ways to balance the difficulties, I think they should not give up their babies easily since the action also entails mothers shouldering ethical loads and social judgments. Abortion is not always the best refuge from the upcoming responsibilities. Take them and let embryos proceed with their lives.

Revised Annotation (2) – The Amended University Act Ensures Students’ Right to Education.

If college students or their lovers are pregnant, should they give up their current studies? Should they give up their colorful university lives in order to give birth to their babies and raise them? As a matter of fact, they need not sacrifice their studies.
Article 26 of University Act was amended in 2008 by Ministry of Education and the amended Article 26 allows college students, both females and males, to extend their studying term due to pregnancy, childbirth and childcare. As a result, college couples can apply for temporary suspension of study in order to earn money to raise their children. Giving birth does not mean college students should totally give up everything including their studies for their children.
Before Article 26 of University Act was corrected, most college students can only apply for temporary suspension of study for at most 2 years. However, it takes a mother at least one and half year to go through the pregnant period, deliver her baby, take postpartum staycation and breastfeed. If a mother wants to continue looking after her youngster, it may go beyond 2 years, which is the limited length for temporary suspension of study.
Fortunately, according to the revised Article 26 of University Act in 2008 , ''A student pursuing a bachelor degree or above may request for prolonging the studying term on account of pregnancy, childbirth, or childcare for the toddler under three years old. '' Moreover, the Act is suitable for both males and females.
In terms of the academic rules of NCU, Reg.40 notes that students can apply for temporary suspension of study because of pregnancy, childbirth, or childcare for the toddler under three years old. The accumulated suspension length is limited to 4 years. The period of suspension will not be taken into account for the total suspension length. Upon the termination of the suspension period, the birth certificate of the student’s child and relevant documents will be used to apply for resumption of Study.
All in all the revised version of Article 26 of University Act ensures students’ right to education and at the same time offer them time to take care of the toddler and earn money to support the economic needs for raising a child and a family during the temporary suspension of study.
